During the 1800's Tobacco was one of the primary crops grown in the area. When it was harvested, workers placed the stalks on sticks about one inch square and several feet in length so that it could be hung in barns to cure.
There are many colorful stories and tall tales about the "Tobacco Stick" ranging from it's use as a "domestic weapon of choice", to the incident that caused this tiny community to be known for years as, Tobacco Stick.
According to local lore, it was said that in colonial times an unidentified Indian, used a 'Tobacco Stick' to vault himself across the channel at the mouth of the creek while being pursued by several white settlers.
Because of the colorful history of the 'Tobacco Stick', and in honor of Madison's birth name, we decided to name our beautiful new Bed and Breakfast …
